International Association for the Study of the Commons (IASC)
The next Biennial conference of the International Association for the Study of the Commons (IASC) will take place in Nairobi (Kenya) between 19-24 June 2023 and is organized in collaboration between the Universities of Nairobi (Institute of Geography and CETRAD) and Bern (Institute of Social Anthropology and CDE). Entitled 'The Commons We Want: Between Historical Legacies and Future Collective Actions', it deals with an issue that is centrally related to the ESEH conference: It discusses the commons and its governance related to historical political and environmental legacies - especially the issue of decolonialisation. It also addresses the question of how local commoners can deal with this legacy and shape the future of common property worldwide. On the one hand, it mainly relates to European and environmental history because European expansion has often undermined local commons worldwide. On the other hand, European commons, especially the Swiss commons in mountain areas, are seen as being a historical model for common property institutions, which showed resilience over time. Scholars attending both conferences will highly profit from the exchange of these two events.
